Esparon, who competed in the seventh last heat, could only manage eighth place with a time of 21.99 seconds yesterday at the Olympic Stadium in London.

The race was won by Churandy Martina of the Netherlands in 20.58, ahead of Kei Takase of Japan who was second in 20.72. Canada’s Jared Connaughton finished third in 20.72.

With a personal best time of 21.75 which is also a Seychelles junior record, Esparon, 18, said he was not at all intimidated by the big names around him.

“I went out confident to do what I had to, but unfortunately I could not improve my PB,” he said.
The young sprinter added that competing in the Olympics came as a boost as he has his mind set on further improving and reaching a higher level in the sport.

“The race was fast, but I gave my best,” he concluded.
As for coach Giovanni Fanny, he described Esparon’s performance as satisfactory, especially after he has been suffering from flu and fever lately.

Seychelles’ only athlete remaining at the Games is high jumper Lissa Labiche who will be in action tomorrow.
