New Dutch ambassador accredited

Dr Reintjes presenting his credentials to President Michel

Speaking to the press after his accreditation, Dr Reintjes, who is based in Nairobi, said his talks with President Michel focused on the international anti-piracy efforts in the Indian Ocean.

Also present was the principal secretary for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maurice Loustau-Lalanne and senior State House officials.

Dr Reintjes noted that a number of Dutch vessels have called at Port Victoria as part of the war against piracy, which is affecting not only Seychelles but also the Netherlands.

He said more Dutch warships are to call at Port Victoria in the future, as efforts to fight piracy in the Indian Ocean are stepped up.

Dr Reintjes said his country is contributing some 300,000 euros towards the setting up of the Regional Coordination Centre against piracy, being built very soon.

He said that following talks with Home Affairs and Transport Minister Joel Morgan on Monday, his talks with the President also focused on the secondment of Dutch prison officers for capacity building in Seychelles.

Dr Reintjes said he hopes that inflow of Dutch tourists to Seychelles will increase, adding that our islands are viewed as an exclusive destination and particularly popular among honeymooners.

He also noted that some 40 Dutch citizens are working in Seychelles in the hotel and diving ventures.

The honorary consul for the Netherlands in Seychelles, Albert Geers -- owner of Sunset Hotel at Glacis and Village du Pêcheur on Praslin -- was also present at the talks at State House.

Dr Reintjes has previously served in various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague and various Dutch embassies, notably Cairo, Baghdad, Pakistan, Caracas and Rome.
