Exhibition showcases youths’ answers to own problems

The project is part of the work being done to emphasise the social renaissance work initiated by President James Michel.

Secondary school students were asked to identify a problem they are affected by and then look for solutions or possible solutions to those issues.

The various works by the students were on display in an exhibition, which was officially opened on Monday by the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) chief executive Vicky Van Der Westhuizen.

Also present were the Minister for Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Vincent Meriton, principal secretary for Social Affairs Linda William-Melanie, principal secretary for Education Merida Delcy, SNYC officials and a number of secondary school students.

Addressing the guests, Mrs Van Der Westhuizen said they realise how important school and education is, and are also committed to actively improve the quality of life of the youths.

“This is the reason we have decided to introduce this competition – to get students more involved in the life of their school and community. In doing so, they will take responsibility for their future,” she said.

“It is only by being active that you will make things move in the right direction. I am sure that you all want to work hard to make your school and your community a safe and fun place to work, learn and live in.”

Copies of the projects were also available for the guests to view as power-point presentations and students were at hand to explain how they aim to deal with the issues affecting them.
All the projects will be compiled in a document which will be used when preparing programmes for the youths.

Copies will also be given to secondary schools, where they will be used as educative materials in lessons like Personal and Social Education and students will also be able to further build on it.

Mrs Van Der Westhuizen said they will also present copies to the government, to help the various ministries in their work in relation to young people, especially in policy-making.

“How happy you will be when you see the idea that you are presenting today become a reality in your school and in other schools. And how proud you will be to say that you played an important part in making things around you better,” she told the students.
