Football: Barclays league division two-The Lions edge closer to title |24 August 2012

This win has helped the Cascade-based team stretch their unbeaten run in the second division to 10 matches and it was their eighth win, putting them 10 points clear of second-placed St John Bosco whom they will meet next week.

However, The Lions were far from convincing on Wednesday despite being slightly better than Foresters who were out of sorts at the start of this match.

The Lions should have opened the scoring in the 13th minute though as Denis Auguste centred to Michael Ernest who was in the clear but he missed a glaring goal from a metre out.

Foresters responded in the 27th minute from The Lions’ goalkeeper Jerome Dingwall’s mistake.

Martin William dispossessed The Lions’ goalkeeper to link up with Gervais Saminadin but Dingwall redeemed himself to block his shot.

Foresters threatened again in the 39th minute as Elwin Estico pounced on a defensive slip but he delayed his shot and fluffed a good opportunity.

The Lions started better in the second half and in the 49th minute, Randolph Lablache burst through to centre across goal but substitute Dave Max failed to tuck home at the far post.

Lablache was menacing again in the 54th minute as he skipped past a couple of tackles but his shot was charged down.

Foresters’ captain and former St Michel defender Godfrey Denis gifted their opponents a goal as he played a short back pass to his goalkeeper Roy Estico and The Lions’ Auguste sneaked in to rifle the ball into an empty net for a 1-0 lead in the 64th minute.

Surprisingly, The Lions decided to drop back and defend their lead, encouraging Foresters to put pressure at them but the Mont Fleuri-based team could not create a clear-cut opportunity, allowing the Cascade-based team to march on to promotion.

The Lions’ manager Davis Khan said his team had done what was necessary to push them closer to their target.

Manager Khan added that his team’s finishing was not to the expected level but overall he was pleased with another victory in a difficult match.
