Students get better insight into coastal habitats |12 September 2012

This comes after they had successfully attended the Academy by the Sea programme organised by the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles (MCSS) together with the Save our Seas Foundation.

They were awarded their certificates by Dr David Rowat, chairman of MCSS, who told Seychelles Nation journalist that this initiative is phase one of several projects.

“While this is a holiday camp-sort of idea, our next target will be including marine subjects and modules in school as part of Biology lessons,” he said, adding a marine ranger’s course at the Maritime Training Centre is due to begin next year.

Educational consultant on the project, Abi March, said she is pleased with the overall participation and explained that the students were able to learn about and explore coastal habitats and realise their importance.

“This was done through poster-making, games and various trips including one to the Banyan Tree as well as Cap Ternay to see the mangroves,” she said.

A little over 30 students -- ranging from primary to secondary – took part in the Academy by the Sea project for a period of four weeks.

Dr Rowat said he would like to see more boys taking part next time round.
