New reading scheme to improve students’ skills |22 September 2012

Presenting the books was Eden Island Outreach Committee representative Laura Lotter who handed the books over to head teacher of Plaisance primary Cyril Pillay.

Also present during the short ceremony at the school was chairman of the school council Terry Servina as well as teachers, parents and students.

Miss Lotter said the initiative came about through Eden Island home owners who had formed the outreach committee five years ago.

“We wanted to do something to give back to the community and contribute in terms of funds or various items when we could,” she said, adding she is sure the books will help a great deal in developing students’ reading abilities.

Special Educational Needs coordinator Claire Legras said she is happy with the gift to the children and explained it is the next step for those who were unable to complete or cope with the original scheme set by the Ministry of Education.

“This new scheme is the Ladybird key word reading scheme and it is very effective when using it to work with kids who have learning difficulties,” she said.

Ms Legras explained that the books hold repetitive words which make it easier for children to grasp.

“We have received around five to ten of each type and grade ranging from 1A to 1C, 2A to 2C, etcetera,” she said.

The school will also be working with corresponding workbooks which the Ministry of Education already has.
