National Assembly approves three motions |02 November 2012

Both motions were tabled by the leader of government business Marie-Antoinette Rose.

Ms Rose said the agreement with Denmark provides for the status of the Danish military personnel on Seychelles territory but mainly operating in Seychelles waters as part of the  European Union (EU) forces patrolling the Indian Ocean in the framework of the military counter-piracy operations.

The Sofa with France will provide legal coverage to French military personnel offering armed security on French fishing vessels. This is not the first such agreement with the French government.

A Sofa is an agreement between a host country and a foreign nation stationing military forces in that country.

Ms Rose also expressed the Assembly’s solidarity with the relatives of Marc Songoire and Rolly Tambara – the two elderly fishermen being held hostage for a year now by suspected Somali pirates.

Ms Rose reassured the families and relatives of the two men of the government’s ongoing efforts to secure their freedom.

The Assembly also gave its support to the establishment on Praslin of a rehabilitation centre to help survivors of drug and alcohol abuse re-integrate into society. The motion was tabled by elected member for Baie Ste Anne Praslin Natasha Esther.
