Plant photo exhibition travels to Praslin

Some of the plant photos on display

The plant photographs were all taken by Seychelles residents as part of a plant photo competition and represent the winning photos in each of six categories, with adult and youth judged separately.

The photo competition was organised by the PCA and the Natural History Museum earlier in the year and the winning photos were put on display at the end of September at the museum in Victoria.

The competition formed part of the ‘Herbarium Project’, a joint project of PCA and the museum funded mainly by the GEF Small Grant Programme; and was a fun way of involving local people in gathering pictures and information about all the plants in Seychelles for the digital plant photo gallery and database at the herbarium.

The display of these plant photos on Praslin has been possible only through the cooperation of Seychelles Islands Foundation (SIF), the Terrestrial Restoration Action Society of Seychelles (Trass) and the district administrations of Grand Anse and Baie Ste Anne, for which PCA and the museum is very grateful.

So we do hope that you will go to see this delightful and interesting exhibition, whether you are nature lover or practical gardener, and whether you love exquisite colours or stunning close-ups of plants.
The photographs will be on display for three weeks altogether:

• Vallée de Mai visitor centre from November 12-16,
• Grand Anse community centre from November 19-23,
• Baie Ste Anne community centre from November 26-30.

Pick up a leaflet or PCA’s newsletter about the Herbarium Project. And if you feel inspired to get out your camera, go into your garden, your vegetable plot, or just wander along the road and take some photos.

We are sure you will find a plant that we do not yet have a photograph of here in the herbarium. Take pictures of the details – the leaves, flowers or fruits, as well as the whole plant.

Write a few details about when and where you found the plant(s) and send everything to us by email (nathismus@seychelles.sc or pca.seychelles@gmail.com) or put it on a CD and mail to Natural History Museum, P O Box 720, Victoria.
