Seychelles set for festival of the sea

This year’s Subios will be celebrated from Friday November 23 to Sunday November 25 under the theme ‘People and the Ocean – Striving for a Sustainable Partnership’.

This festival is not only a celebration of the islands’ marine heritage and its attractiveness as a dive destination, but also to raise awareness of the importance and fragility of Seychelles’ marine eco-system.

Organised by the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB), the three-day annual festival will feature a host of activities, which will start tomorrow at 11am with the prize-giving ceremony of the Subios art and creative writing competition for school children. The ceremony will take place at the National Library.

From 4pm, the popular Beau Vallon site will be brought to life with entertainment and the opening of various stalls manned by local vendors. Paradise FM will be on site to broadcast the event live.

The activity will continue with a special dance presentation at 6.45pm and at 7pm, the event will be officially opened by the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St. Ange, followed by a cabaret show, underwater film show and entertainment that will last till late.

The activities will continue on Saturday November 24, with the Children’s Fun Day, which is scheduled to start at 9am. An exhibition organised by the Seychelles National Parks Authority, Ministry of Environment , Ministry of Education and Global Vision International and various other fun and educational games and activities are in store for the children on that day.

The day’s programme also includes the popular annual SUBIOS Virtual Treasure Hunt. The first one to find the treasure will receive a prize from annual sponsor Jouel-Kenwyn House. The second runner-up will be rewarded by Hilton Seychelles Northolme Resort & Spa while the third winner will receive a prize sponsored by Le Meridien Fisherman’s Cove.

Another popular activity on that day is the Subios Man & Woman competition, with its various interesting cash prizes and trophies to be won by both men and women.  Tom Bowers is the main sponsor of the trophies for this competition.

Other activities to be enjoyed on that day are the beach volleyball competition, domino games and free scuba dive by Big Blue Divers.

There will be a prize giving ceremony for all major competitions of the event at 4pm. The festival will continue in the evening with a film show and live musical show by local artists.
