R32m fish processing unit to be built at Providence

The signing of the contract for the project

The contract was signed by the chief executive of the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA) Finley Racombo, and the managing director of the Qinqjian International Group Wang Shouyou in a small ceremony held at the SFA headquarters.

This was in the presence of the Minister for Investment, Natural Resources and Industry Peter Sinon and other high officials from his ministry.

The SFA had invited bids for the construction of the fish processing unit, which will include three fish processing factories.

The winning bid was from the Qinqjian International (Sey) Group and the project will be financed by the government of Seychelles under the Seychelles/European Union fisheries Sectoral Programme 2012. The facilities will be built on an undeveloped plot of land at Providence’s Zone 6.

The project is in line with the government’s policy to increase value addition in the fisheries sector. Products from the facilities will be targeting both the domestic and export markets.

After the signing, Mr Racombo said great interest has been shown by those wanting to add value to fish caught.

“A consultant had been appointed to monitor all the work on the facility and we are expecting that at the end, we will see fish and fish products have value added to them, for both local and export market,” he said.

He added that the facility’s operations will closely resemble those of the Sea Harvest and Oceana companies.

“Although in this case, we will make available the facility and invite people to come make use of them, and we are targeting primarily Seychellois investors, and are furthermore encouraging those interested to seek funding from institutions like the Development Bank of Seychelles,” he said.

Minister Sinon said the European Union is happy with the performance of the SFA, and to that effect has disbursed their 2.2 million euros earlier than said for the development of fisheries-related projects in Seychelles.

“We have held talks with the EU and we have a list of projects we want to implement over the next two to three years, and everything is on schedule, contracts are being signed,” he said.

The fish processing facility project is expected to be completed 15 months after work starts.
