National Library launches new legal deposit centre for all publications

Minister St Ange addressing guests at the ceremony yesterday

The National Library services unit was officially launched yesterday morning by the Minister for Tourism and Culture Alain St Ange in the presence of British high commissioner Lindsay Skoll, principal secretary for culture Benjamine Rose, director general for culture Marcel Rosalie and other guests.

As part of publications related services, the new unit is also responsible for the management of the international book number agency, the international standard serial number centre, the bibliographic centre and the publications exchange programme.

The unit is also responsible for the management of the Seselwana collection which was also launched by Mr St Ange during the ceremony.

Seselwana collection is the name of a newly launched national collection of publications of Seychelles.

Mr St Ange described the launch as another milestone in the development of the Seychelles national library.

He added that Seselwana is a name which clearly depicts our national identity.
In 2010, the National Library through the National Library Act of June 2010 was mandated to be the legal deposit centre for all documents published in Seychelles, about Seychelles and by Seychellois.

Mr St Ange said the recent transfer from the National Archives of a collection of monographs, extracts, newspaper cuttings and periodicals related to Seychelles and collected under the National Archives Act of 1964 has made great contribution towards the building up of the Seselwana collection.

Guests and visitors viewing the exhibition

During the ceremony, Mr St Ange also launched another publication. This is a collection of 19 poems written by poets who took part in a past Creole Festival activity entitled Poenm Kreol.
They were presented with copies of the collection by PS Rose.

Those present at the ceremony had the chance to visit the National Library services unit and view the Seselwana collection.

An exhibition has also been mounted under the theme ‘A day in the life of a librarian’ as part of activities to mark the National Library Day on December 15. The exhibits are portraying uncommon tasks that form part of library works.
