Andrique Allisop 2012 top fighter |29 December 2012

With this performance he qualified for the London Olympics held in August.

Allisop, who fights in the lightweight (60kg) category, won his first fight at the competition on an 11-6 score against Senegalese Matar Sambou before edging out Kenyan Denis Okoth in the quarterfinal.

He then lost his semifinal bout on points – 16-8 – to Tunisian Ahmed Mejri, who won the gold medal in the category.

At the London Olympic Games, Allisop, only 19 years old, lost to Jai Bhagwan of India on a 8-18 verdict in the round of 32.

This year, Allisop took part in the Aiba training camp in Cardiff, Wales, where for the three weeks – from February 18 to March 10 – he trained under the guidance of Aiba instructors. He also took part in a group training camp alongside other local boxers as well as fighters from Mauritius and Botswana in Mauritius.

He replaces Jovet Jean who won the title last year.
Young Lorenzo Bonne, who is following in the footsteps of his father Jack Bonne, has been awarded the best young boxer title. His main exploit in 2012 was 49kg category gold medal he won at the Gala international de boxe held in Reunion after beating Raymond Pierre of the host island on points.
