Agencies probe Central Bank fire |15 January 2013

The fire, which according to SFRS spokesperson Jones Madeleine broke out at 1.36am on Saturday in one of the third floor offices of the CBS, was quickly put out by the SFRS.

“Alerted by a passerby about the incident, we immediately sent three engines and 14 men who found the bank’s fire alarm already activated,” Mr Madeleine said, adding security personnel opened the doors for the firefighters who accessed the affected office and put out the blaze.

“We then ventilated the building because it was full of smoke,” he said, adding a report of the outcome of their investigations will be released “soon”.

CBS’ deputy governor Christophe Edmond said access to the floor had been restricted but after the investigations the ban to the area was lifted, although the bank itself ensured limited access to its staff while the office was being cleaned “in view of the sensitive nature of documents there may be,” he told Nation.

He however said the fire affected some documents and furniture, but stressed the blaze did not affect the bank’s operations.

Not long ago, the Central Bank had to operate from other buildings after a fault with air conditioners caused a gas to be released making the building unsuitable for occupation.
