Mancham to address Kenya youths ahead of March presidential polls

Mr Mancham addressing the Second World Ecological Assembly in Bali, Indonesia, in December last year

The summit will be officially opened by the President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, and will be held under the theme ‘Taifa Langu, Jukumu Langu’ - which means ‘Our Country, Our Responsibility’.

Mr Mancham’s participation at this summit is at the invitation of the Brand Kenya Board in partnership with the Global Peace Foundation Africa and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD).

This summit will bring together 2000 young leaders -- both male and female -- from all the 47 counties which constitute Kenya and Mr Mancham will speak on ‘The Role of Young Leaders in Achieving U.N. Millennium Development Goals and Peace-Building in Africa’.

A letter to Mr Mancham dated January 21, 2013 and signed by Mahboub Maalim, executive secretary of IGAD; by Mary Kimonye, chief executive officer of the Brand Kenya Board and Dr. Manu Chandaria, regional chairman of the Global Peace Foundation Africa, states:

"Your attendance at this summit will give a strong signal for the positive responsibility of youths, thus paving the way for the March 2013 peaceful election in Kenya, which is of course the concern of the African region at large. Its mission is to inspire pride, patriotism and national leadership among the youths by providing a platform for them to discuss issues of peace, leadership and entrepreneurship. The National Youth Summit 2013 is in line with your constant desire for promoting peace in the region."

Recalling the warm reception Mr Mancham received and the important role he played alongside the son of Martin Luther King at the Young Leaders U.N. Convention which was held in Nairobi in 2009, David Caprara, Vice-President Strategic Partnership of the Global Peace Foundation in Washington D.C., urged Mr Mancham to participate in the Youth Summit.

"You are most popular with the young leaders and nation of Kenya and they have asked me to urge you to grace the occasion."

Mr Mancham, who returned to Seychelles a few days ago from New Zealand and Australia, was very active in Africa-orientated missions in 2012. As a member of the Committee of Elders and Wise of Comesa, he represented the African Union at the Egyptian Presidential Election and later led a mission of the Elders of Comesa to Kinshasa, Congo and Kigali, Rwanda to mediate and promote dialogue between the two neighbouring States who were threatening to resolve their contentions by force.

It is to be remembered that in December 2012 while attending the Second World Ecological Assembly in Bali, Indonesia, Mr Mancham was elected to the presidium of the International Eco-Safety Cooperative Organisation (IESCO), a global organisation devoted to fighting climate change and maintaining ecological safety, with offices in Beijing, Hong Kong and New York and accredited to the U.N. Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc).

Mr Mancham last year was also elected Vice-President and a member of the Governing Council of the Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International (CAPDI) and will attend CAPDI's second general assembly which is scheduled for May 20 and 21, 2013 in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia.
