New helpline set to empower women

The new empowerment helpline was officially launched on Friday at the Secti Building, Roche Caïman, by the chairperson of Women in Action Solidarity Organisation (Waso) Rosemary Elizabeth.

She launched the helpline after the first session of a two-day workshop to equip a group of individuals with skills on how to become counselors for the helpline.

Ms Elizabeth said it will help women and young girls to empower themselves and they will also get help to enter into entrepreneurship.

She added that the helpline is one with a difference and is one which will make a difference in the lives of women and young girls.

The workshop was led by private consultant and trainer Benjamin Vel.
Those who took part were individuals working in various organisations such as the police, social affairs and community development departments.

Ms Elizabeth said the 24-hour helpline will be based at Waso’s office during the day from 8am to 4pm and at night it will be with a counselor.

She added that Waso will also do a follow-up with the counselors and records of all calls will be kept so as to be able to get statistics on the various cases.

The launch of the helpline and the workshop forms part of the Seychelles Alliance for Women’s Development project being undertaken by Waso in partnership with FORMAPER, an organisation based in Italy.

Ms Elizabeth said funding for this project comes from the European Union.
