Catholic Church in solidarity with disaster victims |30 January 2013

In a statement released yesterday, Bishop Denis Wiehe said: “We have all been adversely affected, in one way or the other, by the recent bad weather.

“However the inhabitants of Pointe Larue, Anse Aux Pins and Au Cap have been more affected and many houses in these districts have been damaged or even destroyed as a result of the flooding and landslides.”

Bishop Wiehe expressed the solidarity of the Church, of the clergy and the parish councils, of the communities of religious brothers and sisters, to all those who have suffered during the last few days.

“In a special way, we pray for you who have lost your homes and we plead with Almighty God to console and support you in your anguish in this hour of trial,” he said.

The Church, through ‘CARITAS – Solidarité Chrétienne’, would like to contribute in bringing help to all who are in distress and to participate in the national effort coordinated by the government.

The Bishop said that during the coming weekend masses, he is inviting all parish communities to pray in a fervent way for those who have suffered and to make a special collection.

The funds collected will be sent to those most in need through the Caritas and Parish networks.
“I invite all Catholic churchgoers and all persons of goodwill to contribute generously for those among us who have suffered and lost their homes.”

Bishop Wiehe was to preside a special meeting of the Caritas leadership yesterday afternoon at the Evêché, Victoria, to coordinate the efforts of the Church to help those in distress.
