Athletics: Special Events One competition-Dean William breaks hammer junior record with 45.36m toss |31 January 2013

Voted third overall behind Young Male Athlete of the Year Adam Viktora in last Friday night’s Sports Awards of the Year crowning ceremony, William set the new junior national record with a toss measuring 45.36m during Saturday afternoon’s Special Events One competition at the athletics garden, Stad Popiler.

William’s previous junior record stood at 40.45m and he set it on August 13, 2011 and if he continues with his training and stays focus, it is very likely that the hammer record will take a pretty good beating from him in the coming years.

The hammer for male junior throwers weighs 7kg.
William also won the men’s junior shot put with a best throw of 12.75m.
Both Sportslady of the Year Lissa Labiche and Young Female Athlete of the Year Marie-Helen Rose were absent on the day, probably still celebrating their wins achieved the night before.

In record holder Labiche’s absence, Top Racers’ Samia Almaze (youth) won the high jump event with a bar of 1.50m.

In the women’s shot put which Rose normally dominates, Arsu’s Debrah Servina was ranked first in the youth category with 8.37m and Top Racers’ Bryna Esparon won the colt division with 7.28m.
The women’s javelin winners were Aicha Cushion (youth, with 30.01m), Debrah Servina (junior with 18.09m) and Bryna Esparon (colt, with 13.14m).

The men’s javelin throw event was contested by three competitors in the youth category and Jean-Eve Roseline won with a distance of 41.47m. Steward Louise (35.46m) and Jim Cedras (24.04m) were second and third.

Veteran Jude Sidonie collected his first win with a bar of 1.95m, relegating Carlos Ernesta (1.85m) to second position in the men’s senior high jump.

Leeroy Gamatis cleared the bar at 1.90m to win the junior category, while Gerard Tirant’s best effort of 1.55m earned him first place in the youth division.

Alvin Kilindo (junior) leapt over a distance of 6.26m in the long jump, while Samuel Maria (senior) was measured at 6m.

In the women’s long jump, the battle between two Top Racers’ jumpers went in favour of Diane Nioze with 4.72m and Surera Charles finished second with 4.65m. Unchallenged in the girl’s category, Jessy Eulentin was the winner with 3.22m.

On the tracks, Nioze took another win over Charles in the 60m dash, finishing in 8.1 seconds. Charles clocked 8.7 seconds. Running in the same heat, Eulentin clocked 9.8 seconds to win the girl’s category.

Jean-Marc Elizabeth (youth, 7.9 seconds) and Jean-Jacques Eulentin (boy, 9.8 seconds) were the male 60m winners.

Senior sprinter Danny D’Souza also lined up in the blocks for the 60m dash and he had for opponent Yannick Payet. D’Souza easily won in 6.8 seconds to relegate Payet into second position with 7.2 seconds.

Neddy Marie (senior) was the fastest in the male 300m race in a winning time of 34.6 seconds and second was Travis Hardy with 36.2 seconds, while Ned Azemia (youth), who ran unchallenged in his heat, clocked 36.9 seconds.

In the Special Events competition, local athletes compete in shorter distances, presenting them with the opportunity to once again showcase their talents and fine-tune their techniques before they line up for normal events that feature on the Seychelles Athletics Federation calendar.
