Football: Caf Confederation Cup preliminaries-Gor Mahia teach Anse Reunion a footballing lesson

Two-goal man Raphael Mugai Klongera heads for goal as Anse Reunion defender Andy Ernesta tries to catch up with him

Anse Reunion have now been eliminated from the competition on a 0-5 aggregate score after playing a goalless away draw in Kenya a fortnight ago.
Saturday’s match was attended by Social Affairs, Community Development and Sports Minister Vincent Meriton who was presented with the two sets of players before the kick-off on a bright sunny afternoon where there was much hope that Anse Reunion might give us a win everyone craved for after their credible goalless draw in Kenya.

However, lady luck deserted Anse Reunion as they were in for a rude awakening. In fact they fell behind in this encounter as early as the first minute of play when Moses Odhiambo Ouma played a corner to Raphael Mugai Klongera who let fly his shot from the edge of the penalty and the ball crashed against the foot of the post to roll past the desperate dive of goalkeeper Ricky Rose to give the Kenyans a stunning 1-0 lead. The early goal knocked the stuffing out of Anse Reunion who were desperate not to concede at home.

The Kenyans then never looked back as they took this match by the scruff of its neck to dictate the pace and create numerous chances.
In the sixth minute, Edwin Layatsa Jumba shot narrowly wide after collecting a lay-off pass from Salim Mohamed.

Anse Reunion, who were under the cosh, created two half-chances -- firstly in the 11th minute from Roderick Rose’s long range effort which goalkeeper and captain Jerim Frederick Onyango saved.
Roderick Rose then picked out Hubert Ernesta’s run a minute later and he fed Shaun Barbe whose shot lacked sting to trouble goalkeeper Onyango.
Gor Mahia extended their lead in the 17th minute after some good approach work by Mohamed who cut inside from the right to Edwin Jumba who linked up with Klongera, whose fierce shot crashed into the roof of the net as he completed his brace to make it 2-0 for his team.

Four minutes later, Gor Mahia were at it again as Ouma played a short corner to Mohamed who floated the ball to the far post to Ivan Anguyo who had sneaked in unmarked. Anguyo’s downward header found refuge in the net for a 3-0 lead.

Gor Mahia were taunting Anse Reunion who were out of sorts in defence where they badly missed the composed presence of the injured Armantal Ernesta.

Malagasy captain Eddy tried hard to keep the Kenyans at bay as well as goalkeeper Ricky Rose who stopped Klongera from completing his hat-trick in the 24th minute as he raced on goal.

In the 27th minute, goalkeeper Ricky Rose again stood defiant as the Kenyans threatened to run riot. Jumba burst through to fire at goalkeeper Rose who blocked his shot which fell to substitute Ali Hassan Abondo but goalkeeper Rose again charged down his shot. Abondo had replaced the injured Ouma in the 21st minute.

In the 36th minute, Gor Mahia created another great chance from Klongera’s teasing cross to Mohamed but his shot lacked power to trouble goalkeeper Rose.
Anse Reunion had a gilt-edge opportunity to reduce the arrears in the 41st minute after Hubert Ernesta combined with Malagasy Hugo Sezou. But as Sezou latched onto the return pass, goalkeeper Onyango dived at his feet to clear the danger.

Gor Mahia fans cheering on their team

Gor Mahia came out for the second half intent on adding to Anse Reunion’s miserable afternoon.
In the 52nd minute, Jumba centred to the unmarked Klongera who looked odds on to score his hat-trick but somehow goalkeeper Ricky Rose stopped his shot with an outstretched leg.
The Kenyan side duly extended their advantage on the hour mark as Jumba collected a high ball to roll it to substitute Kevin Omondi Obwaka who then threaded a pass to the same Jumba. Jumba bore on goal to spring Anse Reunion’s offside trap and dribble past the advancing goalkeeper Rose to bury the ball into an unguarded net for a 4-0 score.

Despite the scoreline, there was no let off for Anse Reunion as the Kenyans sent waves and waves of attack which they struggled to repel as they were overpowered in all areas of the pitch and seemed to lack a game plan to counter the superior Gor Mahia team.

In the 63rd minute, Mohamed raced clear to rifle at goalkeeper Ricky Rose who pushed the ball into corner.
Gor Mahia capped a wonderful afternoon with another goal in the 74th minute as Ivan Anguyo combined with substitute Danny Muzeyi who raced to the byeline before pulling the ball back to Obwaka who guided his header into the net for a 5-0 scoreline which showed the gulf between those two teams.

Anse Reunion were soundly beaten in the end by Gor Mahia who had a point to prove after coming unstuck in their home match due to overconfidence according to their Croatian coach Zadravro Logarvsic.

……………

What they said after the match:
Gor Mahia coach Zadravro Logorvsic: “In Kenya, my players thought they had won the match before going onto the pitch as they were too confident. Today we created many chances similar to Kenya except we managed to score three in the first 50 minutes which was good. Though I expected to win, I was not thinking it was going to be easy. Our opponents have good potential but are weak tactically.”

Anse Reunion coach Juel Ah-Kong: “Gor Mahia were much superior than my team and they made it very difficult for my team especially as they scored early and we just could not cope with them.  However, this competition served as a good experience for my team and we hope we will learn from this experience.”

Gor Mahia captain Jerim Frederick Onyango: “This is a great result for our team and we had a good start. Today we managed to score plenty of goals compared to Kenya where we created plenty of chances too.  Despite the scoreline, it was not an easy match but I expected us to win and score many goals.”

Roderick Rose of Anse Reunion: “Gor Mahia are a very strong team with better technical players and we lacked a holding midfielder. We found it difficult to cope with them as was the case in Kenya. We are disappointed especially after a good away result. We had hoped for a better performance and result as we were at home in front of our supporters.”
