A call for change |08 March 2013

“There is one universal truth, applicable to all countries, cultures, communities. Violence against women is never acceptable, never excusable, never tolerable." Ban Ki Moon, UN Secretary General.
”International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political, social achievements of women past, present and future.

“This day celebrates women's success and reminds us of inequalities still needing to be addressed. International Women's Day, March 8, 2013 in Seychelles inevitably forces us to shine a spotlight on some of the burning inequalities going on in our country against women.

“Girls and boys are still raised differently in our homes. Expectations of behaviour are still very different for girls as compared to boys. Teenage pregnancies continue to challenge girl's potential for education and career development. Sexual assaults, rape, intimate partner violence, emotional abuses, put downs are the albatrosses that continue to weigh down the Seychellois women every single day as they struggle to feed their children, balance work, home life and other social responsibilities.

“We call on the society to recognise the multiple roles that women have.
“We take the opportunity to thank all women who are in senior and decision making positions, who are making good and serious decisions and also call on them to always push forward women issues and agenda.

“We urge all Seychellois women, young and “less young”, to always maintain their dignity, persevere and accept life's challenges as it comes, not be discouraged as we are still striving for equality and equity, but to turn these into opportunities for their personal advancement.

“Today is a day to reflect on progress, to call for change, to celebrate the courage and determination of the beautiful Seychellois women who make a difference every day...
