Dengue prevention activity at Mont Fleuri cemetery this weekend |14 March 2013

One of the activities being organised by the Ministry of Health to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds is to put sand in cemetery flower vases/urns instead of water.
The activity will be conducted from March 15-17, 2013. The main activity will be held on Saturday March 16 from 7.30am in the Mont Fleuri cemetery.

In order to ease the process, sand has been made available at all public cemeteries and members of the public are being kindly urged to make the most of such an offer and replace all water in cemetery urns with sand as they visit the graves of departed family members and friends.

Seventy four suspected cases of dengue have been reported but with no deaths. Nine patients with moderate illness were admitted in different hospitals and treated as in-patients, and all have recovered fully.

Three quarters of the cases are adults with equal distribution between males and females. The inner islands and the eastern region of Mahé have been the most affected and this is a result of the flooding caused by tropical depression Felleng.

The Ministry of Health and its multi-sectoral partners are intensifying its efforts to sustain the current control of the outbreak.
There is currently a preparedness and response plan with clearly laid out activities in order to educate the population.
