Special ceremony marks Libya’s second revolution anniversary |18 March 2013

Among those present at the event were former President James Mancham, chief justice Fredrick Egonda-Ntende, Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Paul Adam, other ministers and leader of the opposition in the National Assembly David Pierre.

Other members of the National Assembly, members of the diplomatic corps and several high government officials were also present at the gathering.

In his address, chargé d’affaires of the Libyan Embassy in Seychelles Kairi E Elalem spoke about the strong ties between Libya and Seychelles.

He conveyed greetings of Prime Minister Dr Ali Zeidan to President James Michel, the government of Seychelles and to the Seychellois people, wishing them more progress and prosperity.
“Today we look forward to a fruitful cooperation with all brotherly and friendly countries based in mutual respect,” he said.

“We hope all the countries will cooperate with us to establish our new era of freedom and democracy, and to respect the choices and desires of the Libyan people in future policy-making.”

Mr Elalem said Libya decided to build a state of institutions and law based on respect of human rights, retention and adherence to the country’s state integrity and exploitation of resources to serve the nation and the citizens’ interest.

Minister Adam said Prime Minister Ali Zeidan along with his national unity government deserve recognition for their commitment to work decisively in meeting the basic aspirations of the people of Libya.

“The spirit of the 17th February revolution which created new space for the contributions of youth and women in the Libyan society, should continue to inspire the way ahead.

“We therefore call on the international community to continue strongly supporting Libya’s political transformation – a transformation where national ownership and national responsibility are key to establishing sustainable peace,” said Minister Adam.

Mr Adam also re-affirmed Seychelles’ strong support towards the people of Libya in the process to continue addressing the challenges of its transition.
He added that the anniversary of the 17th anniversary revolution is also a day to celebrate the essence of peace and freedom.

Mr Adam also paid tribute to all those who fought hard for peace, integration and multicultural diversity in Africa – an Africa where empowered people drive growth and sustainable development.

Toasts were then proposed to the friendship and continued solidarity between the two countries, to their leaders and to their people, after which Mr Adam joined Mr Elalem to cut the cake marking the occasion.
