Letter to the Editor-‘We will continue to recognise women’s remarkable contributions’ |25 March 2013

The Seychelles Women’s Day Association (SWDA) launched the Seychelles Women’s Hall of Fame initiative on March 8, 2011 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day. At the launch it was announced that the association intends to profile the first 20 women, who could be nominated for the award either by family members, work colleagues, public and private organisations, women’s associations etc.

There was a response and profiling started.  By March 2012 we had seven profiles that we exhibited after carrying out in-depth research on nominations received.  We hoped that through the exhibition, we would receive further nominations.  We did and in the course of the year we were able to document 11 more women, based on the criteria set by the SWDA.

The coffee table book featuring the 18 Seychellois women was launched as part of the activities to commemorate International Women’s Day 2013.

It was pointed at the book launch that the edition was the first volume and the association intends to continue with the project and produce another book.

We want to continue giving recognition to the remarkable contributions made by women from all walks of life to the lives of their communities and the development of our country.  We continue to welcome nominations for our second volume due to come out in March 2014.
