Volleyball: National league-Women’s champs Friends off to good start

At the Palais des Sports on day one – Saturday – of the Space 95-sponsored women’s league, Friends, captained by Kelly Rath and boasting players like Yvonne Legaie, player of the year Belira Jacqueline and Joselle Labrosse, trounced Santa West 3-0 (25-13, 25-19, 25-16) after 63 minutes of play.

Last year’s runners-up Cascade also made known their intentions for the new season with a 70-minute 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-20) defeat of La Digue who finished third in the league in 2012.

In the men’s division one also sponsored by Space 95, Beau Vallon, recent winners of the Seychelles Volleyball Federation (SVF) Shield, powered past Arsu Boyz on a 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-13) score in just 57 minutes of play and Neo Boyz needed 2 hours 16 minutes and five sets to edge Racing Club 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 24-26, 31-29, 15-12).
Arsu Boyz’ next match is on Saturday against Neo Boyz, while Racing Club will be up against defending champions Premium Spikers.

Praslin-based Saints United are the early leaders of the women’s division two league sponsored by Kokonet after collecting two wins in as many matches and days.

On Saturday, Saints United beat newly formed Ephelia Resort 3-0 (25-13, 25-20, 25-13) in 57 minutes and the following day they needed seven minutes less to dispatch Cadettes 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-8).

In the same league, Mont Fleuri picked up a first win against Port Glaud on a 3-1 (25-19, 26-24, 17-25, 25-15) score in 91 minutes and Bel Ombre beat St Louis Bombers 3-1 (25-10, 17-25, 25-14, 25-20).
