SPA no longer accepts expired identity cards |22 April 2013

Other forms of identification such as passport and driving license are accepted by the agency.

SPA chief executive Wallace Cosgrow said the decision was taken as the number of expired cards being used by people collecting benefits on behalf of beneficiaries was on the increase.
It was therefore important to ensure better control and security to avoid fraudulent practices during collection of benefits, he added.

“The agency has well established and extremely effective procedures for payment of benefits, which are essential to avoid any fraudulent practices,” he said.
“However, we have had a number of complaints in regards to the time limit given for beneficiaries to renew their expired cards.”

The original deadline of April 2013 has now been extended pending further notice to allow beneficiaries sufficient time to make the necessary arrangements to renew their identity cards.
