Organised by the newly formed Seychelles Association of Visual Arts, the expo has around 25 pieces on display.

The expo was officially launched yesterday morning by the principal secretary for culture Benjamine Rose, who said the exhibition demonstrates the role of visual arts through creative African expressions.

“This exhibition provides a platform for the integration of ideas, school of thoughts, expressions and reflections of artists from diverse abilities and potentials, techniques and reputation, and is a merging of the old school from Leon Radegonde to that of upcoming new artists such as Urny Mathiot,” she said.

“This activity is also a celebration of our cultural diversity, cultural affiliation to Motherland Africa, and the need to manifest our African influences through visual representations. This mettissage of cultures is the very essence of the Seychellois identity; we define this as the Seychelles Creole culture, which makes us the proud nation we are today, evidently displayed in this exhibition.”

There was also dance demonstration by Massai dancers, who had come from Kenya to take part in the FetAfrik activities. They showed off their traditional skills with the crowd cheering in delight at their supple and very athletic moves.

Local poet Raspyek was also present to recite a few of his poems.
A good number of local artists have come together to make the Afrikart exhibition possible, such as Christine Chetty Payet, Rita Morel, Colbert Nourrice, Allen Camille, Leon Radegonde, Charles Dodo, Nigel Henri, Bernard Pool, Doris Nourrice, Urny Mathiot, Jude Ally, Barry Gertrude, Alain Samson, Michelle Griffiths, Berverly Morel, Robert Alexis and Rocky Athanase.

All works on display are for sale, with prices ranging from R1500 to R40,000.
