Countrywide beach-cleaning campaign to mark World Ocean Day |07 June 2013

An initiative of the Seychelles Yacht Charter, supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the beach-cleaning campaign, to start at 9am tomorrow -- which is also the World Ocean Day -- aims to further educate our young people and the public at large on the importance of removing waste from our beaches as it will all end up in the ocean if not properly disposed of.

Lynn Gower from the Seychelles Yacht Charter and one of the coordinators of the event said schools are being linked to an organisation in their respective areas and then choose a beach in their region to clean.

Beaches being cleaned are Beau Vallon, Bel Ombre beach and this will be by pupils from Beau Vallon and Bel Ombre schools in collaboration with Berjaya Beau Vallon Bay Hotel and the Marine Conservation Society of Seychelles. 

Pupils from Anse Etoile school will clean North East Point beach whereas Anse Royale school will work in collaboration with Kaz Kreol Restaurant.

At Grand Anse Mahé the cleaning will take place with pupils from  Grand Anse school and staff from Le Meridien Barbarons Hotel and Seychelles Yacht Charter company.

The Marine Parks Authority will cover the Port Launay beach. Global Vision International together with Port Glaud school and children from the President’s Village and staff from Ephilia Hotel will clean the Port Glaud and Cap Ternay beaches while pupils from Takamaka school and staff from the Banyan Tree  Hotel will cover Intendance beach.

Members of the public are being invited to come and give a helping hand and join in the initiative to keep our beaches clean. Anyone interested to take part can join the team nearest to them.
Ms Gower said the idea is to later move the campaign to other islands.

“Our beaches are what attract countless visitors to Seychelles but despite that Seychellois as well as some visitors continue to litter the beaches without any second thoughts and the campaign expects to once again raise more awareness on the dangers that improperly disposed waste can cause,” said Ms Gowers.

Ms Gowers wishes to express the Seychelles Yacht Charter‘s special thanks to Star Seychelles which has provided all the equipment required for the campaign, officials from the education ministry for their unfailing support and everyone else who have supported the initiative.
