Winners of inter-generation contest rewarded |08 June 2013

They received their prizes recently in a ceremony which coincided with the opening of an exhibition of the entries under the theme ‘It’s great to be grand!’

The exhibition was launched by the Minister for Education Macsuzy Mondon, who is also the chairperson of NCC.

Present at the opening of the exhibition held at Independence House were the Ambassador for Women and Children Affairs Erna Athanasius, WHO representative Dr Cornelia Atsyor, executive members of the NCC, representatives of sponsors, grandparents and grandchildren and the NCC staff.

Referring to the letters and photos displayed in the exhibition, Mrs Mondon said:
“Children your letters and photos bear testimony to the valuable role played by grandparents.” 

She thanked the NCC for taking the opportunity to show that grandchildren appreciate grandparents through the competition and exhibition.
“I, for one, feel privileged to be a grandma,” she quipped.

The letter competition was divided into three categories: The 7-9 years category was won by Anais Hipolite and the 10-12 years category by Darren Beaudoin. They both received a camera as their prize sponsored by Seychelles Breweries Ltd.

Tania Pouponneau won a camera sponsored by the NCC as first prize in the 12 years and above category.

The three winners got the chance to read their letters to those who were present. All three letters thanked grandparents for being “the shoulder, the shield and the protector”.
Those who were unable to enter the competition with a letter did so with a photo with their grandparents.

The first prize went to Ethan Abelle and his grandmother. They won R5000 sponsored by Cable and Wireless.
Vincent Confait and his grandson won the second prize of R3000 sponsored by 7° south.

The Seychelles Trading Company (STC) was the sponsors for the consolation prize of R1000 won by Kayleah Gabriel.
The photos showed touching moments of grandparents with their grandchildren.

During the prize-giving ceremony Marina Jacques shared her joy of being a grandmother to the guest, young poet Chloé Vidot, member of Lardwaz (the writers’ association of Seychelles) read a poem dedicated to grandparents and veteran singer Jean Ally passed on his message through his songs Annou ed li and En tan pour tou.
