Airmen complete training in radar use and image analysis

The completion of the training was marked by a ceremony at the Air Force base.

The training will help the Air Force ensure greater situational awareness of Seychelles’ waters and, in particular, help in the fight against piracy.

“Being able to detect pirates at sea is essential,” said the commanding officer of the Seychelles Air Force, Major Michael Pouponneau.

“We are grateful to our European partners for providing this training.”
Three SAF officers followed a two-week training in how to use the radar and cameras on the Dornier aircraft. Three others took a four-week course in how to analyse the images.

The courses included both theoretical and practical parts, including practice flights. The officers also received equipment, such as flight suits and manuals, to enable them to make the most out of their newly acquired skills.

The EUCAP Nestor mission is a civilian EU mission mandated to help countries of the Horn of Africa and western Indian Ocean develop their capacities and capabilities to ensure maritime security, in particular counter-piracy and maritime governance.

The mission is supported by the European Union Naval Force Somalia Operation Atalanta.
