Safety net at Anse Lazio under repair-Public warned to be ‘safety cautious’ when swimming |15 July 2013

A communiqué from the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration (SMSA) said this is because the exclusion net installed for the safety of swimmers has been damaged by the recent rough seas and will require some repair.

In the meantime stationed lifeguard officers in the area have been advised to inform swimmers as well as increase surveillance in the area either on the water or from the beach side.

The SMSA is also reminding all boat owners and operators to ensure that their respective vessels are at all time equipped with the minimum safety equipment according to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) requirement before venturing between the islands or beyond and that the appropriate authorities are notified accordingly.

As for bathers, they are advised to know and understand the area they are swimming in, not to swim in rough seas, to take heed of installed safety signage where available and to abide by the instructions of those signs.

Where there are posted lifeguards on the beach, to be aware of their presence, and to seek their advice as to the general weather conditions, ocean currents, or any other updates as may be of interest.

As a last safety tip, the SMSA reminds the public that alcohol and swimming do not mix and can be a recipe for disaster. Someone under the influence of alcohol should never attempt to go swimming.

Boating or bathing should be an enjoyable experience in the Seychelles waters.  Being prepared and informed in part will help to ensure it stays that way.
