New project to promote sustainable development opportunities for youth in the Blue Economy |20 September 2016

Twenty-five young Seychellois aged between 15 and 29 years, will be given the opportunity to apply for a two to three-week placement in an organisation or company that is part of the Blue Economy.

This forms part of a new initiative entitled ‘Prosperity & Environment: promoting sustainable development opportunities for youth in the Blue Economy’ launched by the SIDS Youth AIMS Hub – Seychelles with the support of the British high commission and the Commonwealth Youth Council.

Examples of such organisations where the youths will be placed include the University of Seychelles, the Indian Ocean Tuna Ltd, the Seychelles Coast Guard, the Seychelles Air Force, Seychelles Petroleum, Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration, Seychelles Ports Authority, Seychelles Bureau of Standards, WISEOCEANS and Nature Seychelles.

During these placements the young people will be provided with hands on experience of the work carried out and analyse how best to attract more of their peers to these fields.

Following their placement in Seychelles 15 selected youths will be flown on Air Seychelles on a one-week fully-funded trip to Mauritius where the Seychellois will get the opportunity to learn about the different aspects of the ocean-based economy there with visits to ocean conservation NGOs such as Eco-Sud, WISEOCEANS, the National Oceanographic Institute, the Faculty on Oceans of the University of Mauritius, and the SIDS Youth AIMS Hub – Mauritius.

This one week will also be open to 10 Mauritian youths and the youths from Seychelles will have the opportunity to collaborate with fellow colleagues in Mauritius on inter-island initiatives.

The programme caters for both youths interested in job opportunities and young entrepreneurs.

At the end of this the participants are expected to produce guidelines for the organisations they attended on how to attract more young people to their organisations and the Blue Economy.

The participants who opt for the entrepreneurship strand will be offered workshops on access to finance and business models, mentorship from seasoned businessmen and will have the opportunity to identify gaps that can be remedied with a business idea.

A roadmap will then be created and will be showcased both at the UN Conference on Oceans in Fiji and the Commonwealth Youth Forum in London.

The applications are already open and will close on October 10, 2016.

The applications forms can be found on the following website: http://syah-seychelles.weebly.com/prosperity--environment.html  and hard copies are available at the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) at Orion Mall. The applications can be submitted via email to syah-sez@outlook.com or deposited at the British high commission at Oliaji Trade Centre or the Seychelles National Youth Council secretariat at Orion Mall.

The eligibility requirements are that the youth must be resident in Seychelles and aged between 15 and 29 years. No qualifications are required although a few organisations have expressed preference for participants to be over 18 and A-level students but this is not applicable for all.

All applications will be blind marked by an adjudication panel of five people. They will be looking for youths who are committed and show a keen interest in working within a sector under the Blue Economy.

There will be additional support for applicants with two CV and application workshops scheduled for September 24, 2016 at the Youth Centre, English River on Mahé and a second on October 30, 2016 for youths on Praslin and La Digue. Furthermore drop in application sessions will be hosted on weekdays from 1pm to 4pm at the Seychelles Chamber of Commerce and Industry, throughout the application duration. You will be able to obtain further details by registering your interest via email on syah-sez@outlook.com or via text on 2508569.

In order to be selected for the trip to Mauritius the participants will be chosen based on their performance during the programme and feedback from the organisations, production of  blogs, vlogs or other means of sharing their experience and assistance will be provided to produce these, their performance during the programme.
