Three teams battle it out in fourth Seychelles Webcup |22 May 2017

• Winners to be known on Friday

Web enthusiasts have had the opportunity to showcase their talents in this year’s Seychelles Webcup and with it the opportunity to represent Seychelles in the finals that will be held in one of the participating countries of the region later in the year.

The preliminary round competition has been organised by SEY-IX (Seychelles Internet Exchange Point Association) in collaboration with the Webcup Association of Reunion and was held at the Care House, Freedom Square over a 24-hour period - from 12 noon on Saturday May 20 to 12 noon on Sunday May 21, 2017.

This year’s theme was AndroindLand, and the three teams present had to design a website for an amusement park, and provide as much details they can such as provision to buy tickets online, among others.

It was the principal secretary in the Department of Information & Communication Technology (DICT) Benjamin Choppy who launched the fourth Seychelles Webcup formed part of activities to mark the ICT Week.

“The Webcup is a challenging competition; you have to physically be ready and willing to spend 24 hours designing the best website. Last year we presented the winners with their prizes just after the 24 hours, but this year the participants will be rewarded this Friday (May 26) in a small ceremony,” he said.

Three teams comprising 10 participants took part in the Seychelles Webcup this year. 

Apart from winning some exciting prizes sponsored by Cable & Wireless and Free Wifi Nation, the winning team will get to represent Seychelles at the Grand Regional Final on one of the other six participating islands and it’s not every day that one has the opportunity to represent his or her country in an international competition.

The Webcup is an annual event first introduced in 2010 by the Webcup Association based in Reunion Island, with the aim of promoting Information and Communications Technology (ICT) around a fun and educational event; with the participants working as individuals or in teams of not more than four persons (amateurs, students and professionals are all welcome) who must within 24 hours (non-stop) develop a website on a topic kept secret until the start of the competition.  The preliminary round is held simultaneously in Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Mayotte, Rodrigues and Madagascar.

The chairperson of SEY-IX Gilbert Lebon expressed his appreciation to the sponsors who have come forward once again to support the event.
