14-July-2012

In yesterday’s group ‘A’ qualifiers at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium, on form Labiche was ranked first, clearing 1.75m, 1.79m, 1.82m and 1.84m with her first jumps.

The qualifying standard for tomorrow’s final was set at 1.84m by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Russian Maria Kuchina and German Alexandra Plaza also met the qualifying standard of 1.84m in group ‘A’, but they both registered failures along the way.

Only Italian Alessia Trost matched Labiche with first-time jumps yesterday, but she started the competition at 1.70m in group ‘B’ before also clearing 1.75m, 1.79m, 1.82m and 1.84m.

Gold medallist with a bar of 1.86m – a Seychelles record – at the recent 18th African Senior Athletics Championships in Porto-Novo, Benin, Labiche will come face to face with 11 jumpers in the pursuit of the gold medal tomorrow – the final day of the championship.

In fact, the 19-year-old, who will be competing at the forthcoming XXX Olympic Games in London through invitation, has made the gold medal her priority, saying “I am hoping to challenge the gold medal in Barcelona”.
