Bank and ministry in new drive to revive agriculture

Messrs Mpyisi and Mend

The signing will mark the conclusion of a five-day visit by a two-man AfDB team who arrived here last weekend through the initiative of the MNRI in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, Trade and Investment.

Their visit was aimed at helping increase support towards the revival of the agricultural sector in the country.

The mission is made up of the bank’s chief agricultural economist Alex Mend and its principal agricultural economist Edson Mpyisi, both of whom are from the Agriculture and Agro-Industry Department of East Africa Regional Resource Centre (EARC).

An MNRI spokesperson yesterday said the two men have elaborated a proposal for approval by the AfDB management.

It includes financial and technical help for projects that will boost Seychelles food and nutritive security status.

The support will include helping MNRI to formulate identified infrastructure projects that are directly related to agriculture; notably the rehabilitation of feeder roads in agriculture districts as well as the rehabilitation and introduction of new irrigation networks.

Udrah Brutus of the MNRI yesterday told Nation that Messrs Mend and Mpyisi have met key partners of the ministry and paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Finance, Trade and Investment Pierre Laporte.

It is Natural Resources and Industry Minister Peter Sinon who is expected to sign the aide memoire on behalf of the government of Seychelles with Mr Mend.
