Basketball: Afro Basket 2013 zone 7 qualifiers-African qualifier postponed again

10-January-2013

The Seychelles Basketball Federation (SBF) has been advised to push the competition to a later date as it will clash with central board committee meeting of the Fédération Internationale de Basket-ball – Fiba (Zone Africa).

Initially scheduled for December last year, the tournament was postponed, at the request of the Fiba Africa executive committee, because of the final round of the Champions Cup which was being held around the same period in the Equatorial Guinea.

The tournament was moved to January 28 - February 2 but has now been re-scheduled.

According to the SBF, so far, no teams have confirmed their participation. Reunion and Mayotte are to take part as invited guests.

If no teams enroll for the qualifiers, Seychelles will finish as automatic group winners and will represent the zone 7 region at the 2013 Afro Basket tourney which will take place in August 2013 in Ivory Coast.

The zone 7 region features Seychelles, Mauritius, Madagascar, Comoros and Djibouti.

Meanwhile, the Seychelles men’s national team are putting the final touches – both technical and physical – to their preparation ahead of the qualifying tournament.

Under the leadership of head coach Clifford Joubert and his assistant Tony Juliette, the Seychelles squad will as from next week change their training schedule to three days a week, instead of two, allowing the coaching entourage to further polish the existing structure which has been in place for the past five months.

Speaking to Sports Nation, coach Joubert said his pre-selection of 13 are all ready to face the challenges ahead, especially the younger players.
He added that the training sessions have been very dynamic, with the total commitment of almost all members.

Coach Joubert added that if all go well, the arrival of professional player Abdel Sylla will be an additional element to the national selection.
