Four local sprinters reach finals

  •          Four  personal best times clocked

Four local athletes have already qualified for the finals of the Mauritius U-20 Pepsi Black National Championships which take will place at the Maryse Justin Stadium (Réduit) on Saturday, with two more final spots still available, as Seychelles will also feature in two semifinals which will equally take place on Saturday.

The four finalists are Jerold Alexis ( boys’ 100m), Neil Azemia ( boys’ 100m and 400m), Angela Calva (girls’ 100m), and Shane Fred (boys’ 400m).

The semifinalists are Alexis (boys’ 200m), and Leah Pool (girls’ 200m).

Alexis also clocked two personal-best (PB) times at the competition, precisely in the 100m (10.88 seconds), and 200m (22.10 seconds), while Azemia clocked a PB in the 100m (11.09 seconds).

Leah Pool, who will run in the girls’ 200m semifinal on Saturday clocked her PB of 26.04 in the heats, while Naomi Toussaint who did not make it through in 100m heat also clocked a PB of 13.45 seconds.

Seychelles has already won one gold medal at the competition, courtesy of Don Wirtz in the hammer throw event.

The other athletes representing the country at the competition are Chloé Joubert (triple jump), Emmanuella Larue (100m, 200m), Mary Dubel (400m), and Jamelah Gonsalves (400m).

After finishing second in her 100m heat, Joubert could only manage a fourth-place finish (13.45 seconds) in the semifinal.

Still in the 100m, Larue finished third in her heat (13.65 seconds), missing out on the final, while in the 400m, Gonsalves could only manage a fourth-place finish in the semifinal, clocking 1 minute 8.72 seconds.

The athletes are being accompanied by coaches Giovanni Fanny and Joseph Adam, while Monica Samson is the team manager.

The team is expected back in the country on June 26.
