Yachting: 2023 Regional Sailing Championships

Excellent performance from local sailors with four gold medals

Seychellois sailors put up a good performance at the just-ended Regional Sailing Championships in Mahebourg, Mauritius, securing eight medals – four gold, two silver and two bronze.

The Regional Sailing Championships were held from September 9 to 16 at Pointe Jerome, in Mahebourg, Mauritius and were organised by the Mauritius Yachting Association. Three countries, namely Reunion and Seychelles competed alongside the hosts.

The competition featured windsurfing, kite-surfing, optimist and laser. Mauritius claimed the other three gold medals which were on offer.

The Seychelles team at the championship was made up of 11 sailors, including Odysius Melanie, Roy Govinden, Jean-Marc Gardette, Joshua Allccon, Alison Hoareau, Samantha Faure, Ella Constance, Lyandro Larue, Tim Figaro, Marius Assary and Jacquelin Languila.

In a special message, President Wavel Ramkalawan congratulated the athletes for their achievements, which he said made the whole country proud.

"Congratulations on the excellent results, you have all made Seychelles proud and ensured our flag is raised to the highest level,” said President Ramkalawan who urged the sailors to keep to training hard and maintain the good discipline.

“Once again congratulations to everyone who formed part of the Seychelles sailing team during these championships,” concluded President Ramkalawan who also sent a message of solidarity to one of the athletes, namely kite-surfer Neddy Radegonde who was seriously injured during the championships, wishing him a speedy recovery.
