Youths invited to apply for Blue Economy internship programme

For the fourth consecutive year, SYAH-Seychelles has launched its Blue Economy Internship Programme. As Seychelles navigates the development of its Blue Economy, the programme seeks to complement this development by inspiring and attracting young people to pursue career opportunities within the sector. Since 2016, SYAH-Seychelles has run three such programme which have provided 85 youth with internship opportunities.

This year’s programme will offer 28 youth, aged between 15 to 30 years old, the opportunity to undertake a two-week internship – from December 10 to 21.

The youth-led NGO has partnered with 14 local organisations to host the interns. The internship experience is different for every intern as they are each placed in a myriad of organisation across the spectrum of Blue Economy careers. Some interns will undertake field work on Silhouette island with the Island Conservation Society while others will pursue laboratory experiments at the Seychelles Bureau of Standards and Socomep.

Interns will also assist with the surveillance of our Exclusive Economic Zone at land or at sea with the Seychelles Coast Guard and Seychelles Air Force or even undertake the inspection of boats with the Seychelles Maritime Safety Administration and Seychelles Ports Authority.

Other interns will conduct surveys and research, organise events and campaigns for organisations such as Seychelles Fishing Authority and the Seychelles Energy Commission, to name a few.

Aside from obtaining work experience in prospective Blue Economy careers, the merit-based programme allows youth to build transferable skills and provides a platform to interact with like-minded youth and network with business owners and entrepreneurs.

It also allows employers to identify, build relationships and potentially recruit future employees.

At the end of the programme, responsible and pro-active interns who have followed the entire programme receive a Certificate of Participation and a Letter of Recommendation that can supplement future job applications.

This year’s programme may even feature a fully funded educational trip to Mauritius to discover the development of the Blue Economy within the region.

Being a programme that allows youth to broaden their horizons, SYAH-Seychelles is encouraging all youths to apply. Application forms are available at www.syahseychelles.org or can be collected in hard copy from the Blue Economy Department at the Oliaji Trade Centre or at the Seychelles National Youth Council (SNYC) at the Ex-Sacos Tower between 8am and 4pm.

Completed application forms should be submitted by November 5, 2019 to syah-sez@outlook.com or in person at the Blue Economy Department or SNYC. For any queries or more information please email syah-sez@outlook.com or WhatsApp 2 508 569 or call 2 535 636.
