Netball association brings netball to inner islands’ schools through jamboree |13 October 2023

The Seychelles Netball Association will be organising a netball jamboree for the inner islands’ secondary schools, namely Praslin, Vijay International and La Digue, on Saturday 14 at Baie St Anne on Praslin.

Speaking to Sports NATION, the chairperson of the Seychelles Netball Association(SNA), Dorothy Isidore, said the activity will start at around 9am whereby coaches and mentors from the association will be teaching the students techniques, movements, tactics and shooting in line with the new regulations set by the International Federation of Netball Associations (Ifna).

She mentioned that they are anticipating to welcome 14 participants from each of the schools. After the morning session when they would be taught the rules and how to play the game, a competition involving all the schools will be organised to give the participants the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt which will also enable the association to pick a few names for the youth team.  The winning team will receive a trophy.

Ms Isidore also said that the other objective for this activity is since next year they will be organising a netball league for the inner islands’ secondary schools, this jamboree will help equip the young players ahead of the competition.

“The schools on Praslin and La Digue will have their own league and at the end of the campaign the champions of that league will play against the champions of Mahé,” said Ms Isidore who added this is the best format because due to a lack of funds, teams will not be able to commute to Praslin, La Digue and Mahé every week to play.

Ms Isidore added that the schools have taken on board the initiative even though some students have almost no knowledge of the sport.
