Plaisance home for the elderly receives donation of fresh vegetables

To commemorate this year’s World Food Day under the theme “A good diet for a world without hunger”, the Ministry of Fisheries and Agriculture has donated a selection of vegetables to the Plaisance home for the elderly.

This was done in a brief ceremony held yesterday at the elderly home in the presence of the principal secretary for agriculture, Antoine-Marie Moustache, who presented the donation alongside Barry Nourrice from the farmers’ association, Keven Nancy, chairman of Seychelles Food Week organising committee, to the home administrator, Danny Laporte.

“Today we come with good things directly from our gardens and farms and these good things mean healthy eating as these vegetables and fruits have been cultivated locally and they are better than imported ones because they are fresh and contain more nutrients than those that are imported,” said Mr Moustache.

He added that World Food Day is a day where we share and what better to share than local produce cultivated by Seychellois.

The vegetables were sponsored by the Grand Anse Mahé farmers’ association as well as a few other farms. All the vegetables were harvested the same morning.

For his part, Mr Nourrice said that to maintain a healthy lifestyle you need to eat locally produced vegetables.

He commended the residents of the home on their small vegetable garden.

On behalf of the home, Marie-Therese Arrisol thanked the farmers for their generous gift.
