Message by Education Minister, Dr Justin Valentin on the occasion of International Education Day

Education Minister, Dr Justin Valentin

‘Education is a beacon that illuminates the path towards a world where diversity is embraced’

“As we come together to celebrate the transformative power of education, we do so under the overarching theme of 'Learning for Lasting Peace.' In Seychelles, we recognise the pivotal role that education plays in fostering a world characterised by harmony, understanding, and shared prosperity.

“Education is not merely a means of acquiring knowledge; it is a powerful tool for shaping the future of individuals, communities, and nations. It is a beacon that illuminates the path towards a world where diversity is embraced, tolerance is cherished, and peace is not just a dream, but a tangible reality. The theme for this year, 'Learning for Lasting Peace,' resonates deeply with our commitment to providing quality education that goes beyond textbooks and classrooms.

“As a country, we understand that lasting peace is not an isolated concept but an interwoven tapestry that encompasses economic development, social cohesion, and environmental stewardship. Our education system reflects this holistic approach, emphasising the values of empathy, respect, and environmental consciousness. We believe that nurturing these values in our students is fundamental to creating responsible global citizens who contribute positively to the world.

“As we celebrate International Education Day, it is imperative to acknowledge the challenges that our world faces. From global pandemics to climate change, the need for collaboration and understanding has never been more critical. Education becomes the cornerstone upon which we build resilience, equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to address these challenges collectively.

“The ministry has embarked on a journey to integrate sustainable development into our educational framework. Our curriculum not only imparts academic knowledge but also instills a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world. By fostering a sense of global citizenship, we empower our students to think beyond borders and work towards solutions that benefit all.

“Furthermore, we strongly recognise the importance of inclusive education in promoting sustainable peace. Education that is accessible to all, irrespective of gender, socio-economic status, or physical abilities, is the bedrock of a just and harmonious society. We are committed to breaking down barriers to education, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow in an environment which is enriching and safe.

“On this International Education Day, let us recommit ourselves to the ideals of learning for sustainable peace. Let us strive to create educational environments that inspire curiosity, critical thinking, and a profound appreciation for the rich tapestry of human experience. Together, we can build a world where education is not just a means to an end but a lifelong journey towards enlightenment, understanding, and sustainable peace.

“I extend my heartfelt gratitude to educators, students, parents, and all stakeholders who contribute tirelessly to the cause of education. May this International Education Day serve as a reminder of the transformative power we hold in our hands to shape a brighter, more peaceful future for generations to come. Let us build an education platform that is based on respect, love and understanding for one another.”
