Beautiful rare fish catches attention

The Meganthias Filiferus

Among the fresh catch yesterday morning at the Sir Selwyn Selwyn Clarke Market was a beautiful rare fish of vivid pink and yellow colour which caught the attention of curious fishmongers.

One of the curious visitors pictured this rare fish – a Meganthias Filiferus – and posted it on the wall on her Facebook page and many people reacted. Some got the fish’s name right and when Seychelles NATION made its own investigation it came up that the fish is indeed called Meganthias Filiferus.

The lady who told Seychelles NATION that she does not know the name of the fisherman who caught the fish said: “Every morning on my way to work, I pass by the market to see the catch of the day. I greet the fishermen, have a nice chat with them and then go to work. But today (yesterday) I saw this nice and unknown fish and everyone was curious to know its name. So I asked the fisherman if I could take a photo of the fish and share it on facebook to find out its name.”

Meganthias Filiferus is an extremely rare fish and very few have reportedly been caught across the world.

The fish is believed to be living in depths of 150 – 200 metres. It is vivid pink in colour with some yellow patches on the head.
