Volleyball : 2020 CAVB Continental Cup – Zone 7 qualifiers

Seychelles miss second round ticket after losing to Mauritius

Our national beach volleyball selections’ hope of moving further at continental level was halted on Sunday after losing their sub-zonal phases matches for the CAVB Continental Cup against neighbours Mauritius in Flic en Flac.

Organised by the Confédération Africaine de Volleyball (CAVB), the continental governing body for the sport of volleyball in Africa, the competition is to give the chance to African federations to take part in the prestigious continental Olympic qualification process.

This year’s competition which is targeting the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan is divided into three phases which are the sub-zonal, second round phase and the finals.

In the pool 10 of the sub-zonal – zone 7 – qualifiers on Sunday, Seychelles who registered four teams – two males and two females – lost all their matches against Mauritius.

In the men’s category, Henrico Ernesta and Danny Marie lost their match 0-2 against Kevin Larose and Gilbert Alfred. The set scores were 10-21 and 18-21.

The other male selection made up of Gerry Lozaïque and Guilly Bijoux also finished on the losing end, outplayed 2-0 (21-10, 21-19) by Stephane Moonisamy and Evans Sauteur.

It was no better for our female selections as they were also eliminated in straight sets.

Gold medallists in indoor volleyball at the last Indian Ocean Island Games (IOIG) in Mauritius, Angelique Adeline and Hilary Nourrice lost their match 0-2 (17-21, 7-21) against Liza Bonne and Maita Cousin, while the other local duo of Natalie Agnes-Sauer and Terryl Songoire lost their match 0-2 against Vanessa Chellumben and Nathalie Letendrie. The set scores were 14-21 and 9-21.

Following the victories, Mauritius have now qualified for the second round of the competition.

Other than the qualifiers, the weekend also accommodated a referee clinic hosted by CAVB referee delegate Giovanni Bake, featuring the assigned referees and national federation scorers, line judges and officials.
