Seychelles win fair play trophy, Tanzania claim third consecutive title

Seychelles won the fair play trophy of the just-ended 2019 Copa Dar es Salaam Beach Soccer Championship as hosts Tanzania claimed a third consecutive title.

Team Seychelles lost their fourth and last match on a 0-2 score to Uganda on Christmas Day to finish fourth and the tournament concluded on Boxing Day (December 26) at Coco beach in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Coached by Herald Kowlessur, Seychelles won the fair play trophy during the prize-giving ceremony which followed the final match of the tournament. They finished the tournament with two wins against Malawi (9-8) and Burundi (6-5).

The host nation Tanzania topped the championship table with nine points, coming from their three wins against Seychelles, Malawi and finally Burundi on the final day.

The only loss suffered by the champions was on the opening day against Uganda on penalties after a three-all draw in normal time.

Uganda Sand Cranes settled for second place and the silver medal after topping Malawi 6-5 on the final day.

Third place and the bronze medal went to Burundi.

This year’s competition was played on a round-robin league format after only five of the eight teams turned up in Tanzania. The leaders after all the rounds were declared as the overall winners.

Teams from Seychelles, Uganda, Malawi, Burundi and hosts Tanzania took part.
