President Danny Faure visited the UAE’s National Rehabilitation Centre, NRC, in Abu Dhabi yesterday morning.

The NRC is an accredited institution with the United Nations World Health Organisation, and provides strategy and policy advice to several countries in the Middle East and Africa.

The compound houses the administrative arm of the centre, premises to allow for the administration of approximately 600 out-patients, sufficient rooms to host up to 200 in-patients, a state of the art laboratory which allows for advanced testing for various types of drugs, and several other services. These services and expertise of the staff have resulted in recovery rates which are roughly double the international norm, and relapse rates that are also much better than those expected of rehabilitation centres.

As was announced by President Faure in 2019, the UAE will fund the construction of a Rehabilitation Centre in Seychelles. Following yesterday morning’s meeting, it has been formally agreed that the co-operation and assistance from the UAE will also include the design of the Rehabilitation Centre and the training of Seychellois personnel who will staff the Seychelles’ Rehabilitation Centre once it opens.

The President was accompanied on this visit by the secretary of state for Prevention of Drug Abuse and Rehabilitation, Dr Patrick Herminie, and the ambassador of the Seychelles to the UAE, Jean-Claude Adrienne.
