Introduction of knowledge management engagement platform to facilitate service delivery

The National Institute for Science, Technology and Innovation (Nisti) has developed a Knowledge Management Engagement Platform that will ensure that research outcomes, reports and metadata in Seychelles is curated, documented, archived and available for access to all researchers, as well as Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) stakeholders at national, regional and international levels.

The new initiative to develop such a platform originated from observation that the outcomes and metadata from research conducted in Seychelles are scattered across multiple agencies, or are not available due to improper research data plans and management systems. This has led to inadequate openness and sharing of knowledge as a developmental resource.

The Knowledge Management Engagement Platform will provide comprehensive access to research data sets, reports and other information relating to the development of STI in Seychelles and the beneficiaries will include students, teachers, researchers, businesses, institutions and members of the public.

The platform contains three key application modules which will be rendered seamlessly to a single User Interface (UI) layer to create an engaging, interactive and responsive User Experience (UX).

One component of the Knowledge Management Platform which has been implemented is the Seychelles Agriculture Agency (SAA) ‘Farmers Digital Engagement Platform’ – a centralised, up-to-date information system that will serve farmers, the SAA and the consumers of local produce. There are three main areas to the Farmers Digital Engagement Platform – the Farmer Relationship Management (FRM), the Farmer Data Capture mobile app and the Consumer Marketplace Portal (CMP).

The FRM will function as a database containing all the attributes relevant to each farm. This will allow SAA to track and measure data from the fields and help them identify, prioritise and manage farmers’ issues, productions, yields and costs, as well as assist with decision making and planning.

The Farmer Data Capture mobile app will allow farmers and SAA field agents to directly feed the FRM application with real time information about farming activities as well as production issues. The app will be user-friendly, allowing for relevant data entry that will work both online and offline.

The CMP will function as a digital marketplace for farmers and consumers. Farmers will be able to market their produce and the consumers (individuals and businesses) will be able to engage directly with the farmers, place orders and provide feedback.

As organisations pursue innovative practices to improve service delivery in their sector, the Knowledge Management Engagement Platform would be a useful tool to facilitate this process.
