‘I salute the courage of teachers who in time of crisis have remained committed and connected with their students’
“Teacher’s Day is a special occasion every year, but this year it holds particular significance. With the unprecedented disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, 2020 has been a powerful reminder of the role and impact of teachers and staff in the lives of our students. We needed to find innovative ways to reconnect with our students and yet again, our teachers have shown the resilience and dedication to not only overcome these challenges but change the way we do things.
“Our teachers have led the change from new ways of teaching and engaging students to new tools and platforms, demonstrating collaboration and teamwork every day. This is reflected in this year’s World Teachers’ Day theme, ‘Teachers: Leading in crisis, reimagining the future’. Today, we pay tribute to the thousands of men and women here in Seychelles and around the world who ensured the provision of education to millions of school children at the frontlines of the fight against Covid-19. I salute the courage and resilience of teachers who in time of crisis have remained committed and connected with their students.
“In Seychelles, this year we are also celebrating 30 years of Teachers’ Day Celebration. In view of the pandemic, the celebration will look different from the previous years. However, I hope that teachers take the time to reflect on what truly matters: connection with one another. Every day over this public health emergency, our teachers have lived the lessons we teach our students – lifelong learning, resilience, and care and support for one another. It gives me pride that our students see these values in action, exemplified in their teachers.
“The 30th commemoration of Teachers’ Day underscores the message that teachers are the cornerstone of our nation. Government continues to recognise the invaluable contributions of teachers for their long years of service. We will continue to invest in the professional development of teachers as it is an investment that will pave the way for the future of our nation.
“To all teachers and staff at schools, I commend you for your commitment and leadership. I know it has not been easy. Thank you for going above and beyond to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our students, and guaranteeing that learning continues no matter what. At some point, this pandemic will be over. The spirit that all of you have shown over the past few months gives us confidence that we will emerge from this crisis stronger, more united and more resilient than before.
