Three get suspended prison sentences for drug-related offences |28 October 2020

 

Two Seychellois men and a woman have been convicted by the Supreme Court in three separate drug cases.

They all pleaded guilty to charges related to drug offences which they were arrested for by officers of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) of the Seychelles Police Force.

The first convict is Remy Jean Quatre, a 35-year-old client of the Apdar drug rehabilitation programme of Les Canelles, Anse Royale. He was sentenced on October 9, 2020 to a term of one-year imprisonment suspended for a period of one year on condition that he attends his rehabilitation programme at Apdar during such period.

On April 16, 2019, Quatre committed the offence trafficking in a controlled drug, when 4.19 grammes of heroin (pure quantity 2.38 grammes) were found in his possession at Les Cannelles.

The second convict, Khulood Meftah, a 36-year-old female carer of Anse Aux Pins, was sentenced on October 12, 2020 to a term of six months imprisonment, suspended for a period of two years, for the offence of possession of a controlled drug with intent to traffic.

She was also fined R5000 which, in default of payment, she will serve six months imprisonment.

Meftah was arrested on February 18, 2019 at her home in possession of 80.04 grammes of cannabis resin (hashish).

The third convict is Michael Andrew Jean, a 44-year-old unemployed resident of Corgate Estate who is also following the Apdar methadone programme. He was sentenced on October 22, 2020 to a term of two years imprisonment suspended for two years for the offence of possession of a controlled drug with intent to traffick 3.9 grammes of heroin (2.30 grammes purity).

He was additionally fined R7000 payable on or before January 31, 2021 and in default of which he will serve a term of 3 months imprisonment.

He was similarly sentenced to one-month imprisonment suspended for three months for possession of a controlled drug with intent to traffick 0.30 grammes of herbal cannabis. When Jean was arrested by the then NDEA agents on August 21, 2017 at Anse Boileau where he committed these offences, R1892 were also found in his possession along with the drugs.
