Christmas 2020: Gifting and celebratory trends

Christmas trees and ornaments, festive songs and shimmering fairy lights, signal to us that Christmas Day is near. This year, while we continue to face a global pandemic, we know that the festive season is set to be very different.

Looking at various press releases and trend forecasts, we share with you some of the most meaningful ways you can still plan to make this Christmas special, despite the ongoing challenges that this year has brought.

Support local businesses

So many local businesses have been affected by the pandemic and this year, we are reminded of the value that they bring to our everyday lives.

From our local artisans, farmers and fishers, to restaurant and café owners, we can find ways to show our appreciation, and support them during these difficult times.

Try handcrafted products like jewellery that are made here as ideas for gifts, order your cakes and other snacks from a baker whom you know is struggling, and visit the farmers and fishers in the market for fresh produce to serve up on Christmas day.

Gift the essentials

The pandemic has brought financial challenges for so many people, and while any gift we would choose for our loved ones would make them happy, gifting those who are struggling with something that they really need, will truly help them.

Think of things for their children like books and school stationery, food and drink hampers that the whole family can enjoy, or gift vouchers that your loved one can use at their favourite supermarket. If you are able and want to, you can even think of giving essential gifts to people who are vulnerable or to places like animal shelters.

Give gifts that cheer up others

It has been and continues to be a hard year; a year that has caused a lot of panic, anxiety, stress and tension for so many people across the world.

It’s important, more than ever, to really give thought to how we can make gestures, no matter how big or small, to help cheer up the people around us, to bring them some joy and put a smile on their faces.

This can be anything, from personalised gifts to creating a special moment or experience for them. Think about what your loved one is really passionate about and what would make them smile. If they like travelling and tasting international cuisines, search up some recipes on the internet and cook them a nice meal.

Gift your time

With so many people losing their family, friends and colleagues in this global pandemic, we are reminded of the importance of spending time with our own loved ones, and if that’s not physically possible, then try to keep in touch with them as much as you can and show them that you think about them.

Christmas can be a very hard time for people who feel lonely, and the pandemic will not make things easier. Do you know someone who could be feeling sad, lonely and neglected this Christmas?

There are many ways we can be there for someone. A simple visit just to say hello and see how they are, or doing something fun together like going for nature walks, having tea together at a local café or baking a cake together.
