Three suspects remanded over weekend theft |13 January 2021
Three suspects (all police officers) who were arrested over the weekend after being accused of theft in the Anse Etoile district have been remanded for 14 days by Chief Justice Ronny Govinden.
The case took place in Court Room 1 yesterday morning following an application by the Prosecution filed by state counsel Hemanth Kumar, who stated that more investigations were needed with evidence gathered and that other suspects could still be at large.
Counsel for the first suspect, Karen Domingue, opposed the application for remand on grounds that there was not enough evidence and that the person is still a suspect and has not been charged.
Counsel for the second suspect, Clifford Andre, also objected to the application on similar grounds and also stated that seriousness of an offense isn’t enough ground for remand.
The third suspect will be applying for legal aid as he was not represented. He however stated he is not guilty and that he should also be released like suspect one and two.
Chief Justice Govinden found that because the suspects are police officers, this makes it a special circumstance as they may use their connections with the police and other resources to interfere with the investigations. For this reason they are all three remanded until January 25 whereby a ruling will be given in court in this matter.
