| Schools celebrate the environment - 25.06.2009
World Environment Day is celebrated around the globe on June 5. In Seychelles, schools were encouraged to organise activities at school level to celebrate that day and that was done on June 4. Most schools concentrated on this year’s international theme Unite Against Climate Change. In some schools, such as Beau Vallon and Anse Etoile, special presentations were done to educate school population on climate change.
With the assistance of the Department of Environment, schools planted a variety of trees, especially local ones, as a means of combating climate change. Plants play an important role in combating this global problem as they absorb carbon dioxide released in the air. In some schools special exhibitions on climate change were organised in order to raise awareness on the issue, as well as sensitise the school’s population.
As last year, schools like Grand Anse Praslin had the opportunity to move out of their school compound to visit the different natural areas on their island, like Vallee de Mai, La Plaine Hollandaise, Glacis Noire and Fond Ferdinand. Students from the School for the Exceptional Child enjoyed environmental films and documentaries. In general, most schools in the country tried to organise something special for that day.
Beau Vallon Primary school had a sensitisation programme for the whole day. After a special assembly which honoured God for the wonderful natural things they have been blessed with, students, teachers and even non-teaching staff performed songs and other creative pieces of work on environmental issues, especially climate change. This was then followed by environmental education games for the very young where as the middle and upper primary had special presentations on climate change and how this could impact on our small islands. Even the Olympic club of the school prepared a special exhibition on recycling and ‘Pa I Gou Ler ou Plant Kot Ou’. In the end the whole school population was involved.
World Environment Day features on the school annual extra curricular calendar and this year with the assistance of the School Environment Representatives, Seychellois children joined those across the world to honour our natural treasures. |
